Description

Easter Cottage, located at Saltpans in Charlestown, is an early 19th century house that may include some early 18th century elements. This single-storey and attic building has a three-bay rectangular plan and is designed in the cottage orne style. The central roof section is hood-shaped and raised to create a verandah canopy, with harled and painted surrounds.

On the south elevation, there is a recessed central verandah section featuring a replacement glazed door to the left with a fanlight and a tripartite window to the right. Above, three Gothick pointed arched windows with Y-tracery can be seen, supported by two slender intersecting columns that hold up the canopy. The outer bays have bipartite windows.

The west elevation includes a bipartite window on the ground floor and an attic window to the right. The north elevation features a central replacement door and two replacement windows to the right, along with a gabled addition above the door that has a central replacement window.

On the east elevation, there is a bipartite ground floor window to the right with a hoodmould, and a central attic window. The building displays varied glazing patterns, with timber sash and case windows that have horns. There are also two round-headed dormer windows located entirely within the roof, centered above the ground floor bipartite windows on the south elevation. The roof is pitched and covered with slate, featuring a conical central section, raised smooth skews, and swept details at the chimney and eaves. The gable apex stacks are corniced with three square linked shafts, while the central stack at the rear gable has three diagonally-set square linked shafts and polygonal cans.

The interior was not seen as of 2000. Surrounding the property is a rubble boundary wall that encloses the garden on three sides, topped with rough coping stones and featuring a central gap opposite the main entrance.
