Description
South Lodge, part of Strathenry House, is a C19 gabled lodge house with a more recent extension. The original lodge was built before 1856. It is constructed of droved ashlar stone with stone mullions and chamfered arrises, featuring a deeply-chamfered base course.
The south elevation has a projecting gable on the left with a central window, and a truncated gable to the right with two windows. The east (entrance) elevation has a wide gable on the left, featuring a canted window beneath a moulded cornice. A modern glazed door is set into a narrower gable on the right, above which is a blind, chamfered tablet and a small light. A blank recessed bay extends to the outer right. A single gable with a window faces north. A flat-roofed modern extension adjoins the north and west sides of the lodge.
Modern uPVC windows are fitted throughout, and the roof is covered with grey slates. The lodge has shouldered and coped ashlar stacks, with deeply overhanging eaves and plain barge boards.
The boundary walls are constructed of whinstone rubble with coped tops. The gate piers are harled on their inner faces with a low, semi-circular ashlar wall linking them to outer, round ashlar piers with moulded coping. The gate piers feature a pyramid top, possibly an obelisk.
The lodge was designed in the style of Burn and Bryce. It forms a group with Strathenry House, although the east lodge has been significantly altered and is not included in the current listing. The building is shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1856.
