Description

49 Corbiehall in Bo'ness is a building designed by Matthew Steele in 1932. It consists of a crescent of three local authority tenements, featuring two large three-storey L-plan blocks with three-bay canted corners, which flank a two-storey rectangular-plan block with a piend roof, situated on higher ground. The building has a cement render on a red and white brick base that reaches the ground floor cills.

The larger east and west blocks have slightly projecting entrance bays that are vertically aligned with chimney heads. These bays consist of moulded piers that rise through the eaves, forming battered stacks topped with stylised crenellated pediments. The north block features red brick door margins that extend to a first-floor banded cill course, along with a vertically emphasised shaped stair window above the door. The doors have shaped heads and are part-glazed with decorative astragals.

At the rear, some window heads are stone-pedimented and break the eaves. The building has regular fenestration that includes single and bipartite windows. Multi-pane glazing patterns are retained in the stairwell and some rear elevation windows, although most of the windows have been replaced with uPVC. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the stylised entrance bay stacks are complemented by coped red brick stacks, some of which are shouldered and fitted with cans.

The boundary walls consist of coped rubble and semicircular-coped rendered walls at the rear.
