Description

The Bo'Ness Warehouse, part of the Ballantine Bo'Ness Iron Company Limited, was built between 1856 and 1877 and has undergone some later alterations. It consists of two ranges of an iron foundry featuring some classical detailing, connected by large sliding metal doors, and facing Links Road and Stark's Brae.

The western range is two stories high, has 12 bays, and is L-shaped with a stepped roofline. It is currently used as a pattern shop, offices, and caretakers' accommodation. The eastern range is also two stories, has 11 bays, and is rectangular in plan, currently serving as a warehouse. The buildings are mainly constructed of harled brick, featuring a band course, a cill course at the first floor, and dentilled eaves. Some sections have lined out render. The openings are segmental-headed, with some ground-level openings fitted with boarded timber shutters and iron hinges. The Stark's Brae elevation has irregular fenestration for the caretakers' accommodation.

There is a variety of glazing styles present, with predominantly multi-pane glazing in the metal-framed windows of the harled ranges (the warehouse and pattern shop). The ground floor features metal-framed casement windows, while the first floor of the rendered corner section has non-traditional windows. The roofs are piended and primarily covered with corrugated material. The stepped west range has predominantly truncated, banded brick stacks, while a truncated cylindrical brick stack is located at the rear of the pattern shop.

The interiors of the warehouse, pattern shop, and offices were observed in 2013. The warehouse and pattern shop have timber floors supported by slender cast-iron columns, and some lifting equipment remains in place.
