Description
Stonebyres, also known as Stoneybyres, is a late 18th or early 19th century U-plan steading that underwent alterations in the mid-19th century. The complex features a central farmhouse with a byre to the right and a barn to the left. The house is two stories tall with three windows, including a door and a first-floor window located to the left of center. It is constructed of rubble with droved ashlar dressings and raised margins, and it has a modern false quoin and voussoir doorpiece. The roof is slated, with broad eaves at the gables supported by end corbels. The rear of the house is rendered and includes a small single-storey addition to the right.
The steading buildings are single-storey, made of whitewashed rubble, and have been reglazed. There is a lean-to catslide addition along the outer flank of the byre and a haystore along the outer flank of the barn. An open timber colonnade with a corrugated iron roof connects the structures. At the house end of the byre, there is a higher wing with an ashlar chimney, which may have been a former washhouse. The roofs are slated, and the front gables previously featured broad eaves, of which the end corbels still remain.
