Description
31 High Street in Dunbar is a building designed by Swanston and Legge from Kirkcaldy and Burntisland in 1899. It is a three-storey structure with a full-height attic and features five asymmetrical bays. The exterior is made of squared sandstone rubble with contrasting ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble.
The ground floor includes shop fronts and a pend that leads to a back stair for the tenement. Above the ground floor, there is a fire-clay balustrade that runs the full length of the building. The first and fifth bays on the first and second floors have two-storey, three-light canted bays with undulating parapets. The building is topped with stepped gables, each adorned with a scroll and finials depicting a lion and unicorn.
The front has a steep mansard roof, while the rear features a flat roof. Decorative gutter fixtures and a vase-shaped rainwater head add to the building's character.
