Description

Monkrigg Farmhouse, built around 1860, is a two-storey farmhouse featuring a single-storey wing and a rear extension, designed in an irregular L-plan. The main elevations are constructed from squared and snecked rubble of red-brown sandstone, while other parts are made of coursed rubble. The margins are flush and chamfered, with most surfaces being stugged and droved.

The front elevation is asymmetrical with three bays. To the west, there is an advanced gable that includes a rectangular bipartite bay window on the ground floor, topped with a monopitched roof, and a similar bipartite window on the first floor, featuring a stone mullion. The central front doorway is set back and has a porch at the angle of the return, with a continuation of the gabled roof pitch above. The door is four-panelled and is flanked by narrow single lights above an external dado, topped by a high-arched single-pane fanlight. To the east, there is a tripartite canted bay window on the ground floor, with a pitched and moulded stone roof below a gable-headed dormer that breaks the eaves on the first floor.

On the west elevation, there is a single window on the ground floor, flanked by a doorway that has been altered to provide access to a modern lean-to conservatory. The first floor features two gable-headed dormers that break the eaves.

The east wing has single windows centrally located on the south, east, and north elevations. The rear elevation is mostly blank, with two low piended outshots that include a doorway and four window openings.

The windows are timber sash and case, mostly with four panes, except for the east wing, which has eight-pane windows. The roofs are covered in ungraded grey Welsh slates, with projecting eaves and verges, except for the rear outshots. The main gables, dormers, and porch feature elaborately fretted decorative bargeboarding. There are four ashlar chimney stacks with moulded projecting copes, although some cans are truncated or removed. Decorative rainwater hoppers are also present.

The gates consist of gatepiers made from roughly dressed sandstone, topped with heraldic lions, and are accompanied by heavy decorative cast-iron gates.
