Description

This is an earlier to mid-19th century stable range, incorporating earlier buildings at the rear, situated on Hedderwick Hill. Constructed from coursed red rubble sandstone with droved ashlar dressings, the building follows a U-plan.

The south range is symmetrical, with raised impost and eaves courses across its six bays. A two-stage entrance bay is centrally advanced, featuring an altered roof with a segmental pend and keystone; the original piend roof has been raised and slate hung to the upper stage on each side. Recessed bays flank the entrance bay on both sides, each containing blind arched panels, with a window inserted into the outer right panel of one. Advanced end bays have a segmental archway to the outer left and a blind panel with a window to the outer right. All windows are barred.

The east range consists of two cottages with irregularly spaced openings. Two archways, originally positioned to the right of centre, were blocked when the second cottage was formed. This range has a lower eaves line than the south range. The outer left bay of the south range features a doroway at ground level and a granary window above.

The west range is largely blank, with machine doorways at its centre and a doorway leading to a covered dairy passage, which is flanked by irregular windows.

A lean-to rubble ancillary building is attached, extending to the north at the east end and completing the U-plan. A piend-roofed pantiled projection extends from the west range, at the centre. A modern, open corrugated iron structure is located at the north end of the west range, set at right angles.

The windows are predominantly sash and case windows with 12-pane multi-pane and 4-pane glazing patterns. Slate piend roofs cover the building, and brick and sandstone stacks stand proud. A ventilator is present on the pantiled projection.

The interior of the south range contains two stalls on one side and three on the other, with boarded and curved walls, culminating in ball and acorn finials. A cast-iron hay basket is also present.

A probably later 19th-century decorative dairy pavilion, of an octagonal plan, stands nearby. Constructed from squared and snecked red rubble with stugged ashlar dressings and a battered base course, it features yellow brick window jambs. It has narrow three-pane windows in seven faces, with a doorway on the eastern face leading to a passage within the west range. The roof is facetted with swept, timber-bracketed eaves and grey slates. A leaded tapering finial tops the structure and swept ventilators are spaced on alternate faces. The interior features a square enamel tiled dado and a vaulted, boarded ceiling with a central ventilator boss.
