Description
The Ballencrieff Granary is a 16th-century building, with subsequent alterations, originally built as a house and later used as a granary. It is an L-shaped structure constructed of random rubble with freestone dressings. The building has irregular openings, some of which have been blocked up. Doorways on the first floor were once accessed by a forestair, and a corbel course above indicates the former location of a lean-to. Modern sliding doors have been inserted into the ground floor of the northeast gable. There is no internal access between the ground and first floors, with access provided by ladder. The roof is covered with red pantiles, coped at the ends and crowstepped to the east, featuring a brick stack. Six beak skewputts are present, three of which bear shields displaying arms.
Historical records indicate a hospital dedicated to St Cuthbert existed at Ballencrieff in the 13th century. This later building appears to have been associated with the hospital and with a nearby property known as Redhouse, formerly Red Spittal.
