The Courtyard, Farm Steading, Crauchie

The Carthouse is an early 19th century U-plan farm steading that has been recently converted to residential use while retaining many of its original features and character. The building is constructed from random whinstone rubble with grey ashlar dressings around the major openings.

On the east range, there is a four-arched cartshed and granary, which features a forestair leading to a doorway at the first floor; the arches have been glazed. The door openings at the rear have been enlarged and also glazed. There are two cattle courts adjoining to the west, with one area gravelled and the other used as a garden.

The west range includes a horsemill that is attached to the former granary, which now has modern full-length plate glass windows. The glazing throughout is largely modern, with a good use of plate glass in the glazed cartshed openings, and modern skylights have been added to the roof. The roof is covered with red pantiles, many of which have been renewed, and features straight skews with ashlar coped stacks.
