Description
The building at 7-9 Duke Street in Belhaven, Dunbar, is a mid-18th century L-plan house. It consists of a street-fronting block and a simple classical block that adjoins to the north, bordering an earlier courtyard. The structure is made of red sandstone rubble with painted margins.
The south block features three bays, with a deep central door and a small window to the left. An iron lamp bracket is positioned above the door, and the windows have 4-pane glazing. The east gable is harled above and rendered and lined at ground level. The roof has been renewed with pantiles, and there are harled gable stacks and plain skews.
The north block, which may be from the later 18th century, is constructed of random rubble with raised, painted, and droved stone margins. It also has three bays, with doors located in the first and third bays. The left door is a broad, flush-panelled type with small-pane upper-lights and is topped with a moulded architrave. The windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, and there are large windows on the first floor. A blind sash window is located in the center of the first floor, with a small square window inserted later below it. This block has a slate roof with a harled end stack.
There is a single-storey outbuilding, a former stable, to the east of 7 and 9 Duke Street, separated by a wall and gatepiers. It features a wide doorway in the west gable and has an east gable that abuts 5 Duke Street. The outbuilding has a pantiled roof with slate eaves easing course.
Additionally, there is a garden wall made of random rubble, which is rendered on the south side and has ashlar gate piers.
