Description
West Range, Pitcox Old Smithy is a building that likely dates from the 17th century, but probably from the 18th century, with some later alterations. It consists of a smithy and ancillary buildings arranged in two parallel rows, with rubble retaining walls enclosing the ground between them, both following the slope of the land. The structure is made of red sandstone rubble, with some areas featuring stugged and droved ashlar dressings that were added later. The windows have a multi-pane glazing pattern, some of which are in sash and case style, and the roof is covered with pantiles. There are gable end stacks.
The east range has a steeply pitched gable to the south and a piended end to the north. It includes a three-bay cottage by the roadside to the south, which has a doorway flanked by windows on the west side and a square window flanked by larger windows on the east side. The smithy is located to the north, featuring a door and windows on the east side, as well as machinery doors and a doorway that breaks the eaves with a swept roof on the west side, which serves as a stable door.
Inside, there is a massive lugged, hooded forge at the north end of the smithy. The west range also has steeply pitched gables to the north and south. The east elevation has irregular openings, including two doors and two windows, along with a blocked window. There is a former lean-to, which is currently roofless and in a ruinous state, attached to the north gable and is a later addition.
