Description

The gates, gatepiers, and boundary wall form an impressive entrance to New Kilpatrick Cemetery, which opened in 1903. The cemetery's layout deliberately mimics the shape of a Roman Centurion’s helmet, and includes a Douglas of Mains Mausoleum and two exposed sections of the Antonine Wall (a Scheduled Ancient Monument).

The substantial gatepiers are square in plan and built of ashlar stone. They feature tall, finely worked shafts with a raised base course, strip quoins, and a moulded string course near the top. The piers are capped with a shallowly ogee-curved capital, a banded string course, and projecting, pagoda-shaped caps topped with large ball finials. Art Nouveau style wrought-iron and cast-iron gates are set within the gatepiers, incorporating a central stylized thistle emblem on the plain railings. A tall wrought-iron barred pedestrian gate sits to the left of the main gateway. Curved walls link to a low ashlar boundary wall, which originally had iron railings but now has hedges along the rear.

The Douglas of Mains Mausoleum, dating from 1906, occupies a raised, rectangular burial plot enclosed by low walls of coursed, stugged red sandstone. The walls have a splayed top to the base course and plain rectangular coping stones. A raised entrance is on the south side, with plain rectangular buttresses centrally placed on the east and west walls. The interior burial area is raised and covered with loose pebbles; a commemorative plaque on the north wall displays the Douglas of Mains family crest and raised lettering.

Numerous gravestones and memorials are located throughout the cemetery. One notable example is an elaborately carved Celtic Cross from 1927, erected in memory of a Douglas of Mains family member, Douglas Campbell. The cross features a foliated shaft, a carving of a medieval knight on the shaft’s head, and a heraldic shield at the base, all set on a three-stage base with flanking stones. A large granite headstone from 1940 commemorates Eliza Templeton Hammond Couper and William Ramsay Law. It has a low, tapered granite base and a decorative bronze relief of two trumpeters. A further tripartite granite gravestone from 1926 commemorates Robina Hutton, Alexander Monteath McLundie, and family; it displays a round mosaic at the top centre, depicting a bird in sunlight inscribed with "FREEDOM AND LIGHT", and a larger rectangular mosaic on the rear depicting a woman looking towards the heavens.
