Description
The estate worker's houses and river Ayr viewing platform at Old Barskimming date from the later 18th century. The single span, round-headed arch estate road bridge crosses the river Ayr in a deep ravine. It is constructed of stugged red ashlar sandstone, featuring a moulded arch flanked by buttresses that terminate in tall obelisks, which are adjacent to a balustraded parapet. The approach walls include two capped round-section ashlar piers at the northern opening, which lead into a semi-circular area defined by capped ashlar piers linked by chains. The southern approach also has walls and two similar round-section piers, with the wall continuing to the west side, where there are two additional gatepiers and a long ramp leading to the estate workers' houses.
The estate workers' houses consist of a long, two-storey rectangular block made of red rubble sandstone, topped with a piended slate roof. The houses have boarded doors and predominantly feature 12-pane sash and case windows along with top-hopper windows, and a ridge stack with a thackstane.
To the west, there is a crenellated viewing platform built over a cave, which includes ogival-headed windows.
