Description
This is St Andrew's Parish Church, located on St Andrew's Street, Kilmarnock. The church was likely designed by James Ingram and built in 1841, with renovations and additions made in 1912. It is a Greek Revival hall kirk with a prominent temple front, a later rectangular extension to the rear, and a two-stage bellcote. The church is constructed of ashlar with polished dressings, incorporating a base and eaves course, along with angle and window margins.
The main, or southwest, elevation features a temple front distinguished by angle pilasters and paired full-height Doric pilasters that flank the entrance and support an entablature and shallow pediment. Behind this is a low, two-stage square bellcote with curved angles above the first cornice. It has round-arched louvres with panelled pilasters and pediments on each face, topped by a dome and weathervane. The central entrance has a two-leaf semi-glazed door, with paired pilasters flanking it, containing single lights. There are three lights to the gallery above, separated by pilasters. A cornice and blocking course extends over the outer bays.
The northwest elevation is a regularly fenestrated two-storey, four-bay elevation, containing a door in the fourth bay on the ground floor, with a recessed rear extension to the far left. The northeast, or rear, elevation is largely blank, except for an apsed chancel, centrally located with two regularly placed windows. A later two-storey vestry addition sits to the right, presenting blind elevations to the rear and left return. The right return of the vestry has steps with stone wing walls and wrought-iron rails leading to a ground floor entrance door, accompanied by a bipartite window to the left. Above that are two bipartite windows on the first floor.
The southeast elevation is another regularly fenestrated two-storey, four-bay elevation, with a door in the first bay on the ground floor, and a recessed blind wall to the right.
The windows are timber, featuring two and three panes with square stained glass quarries visible from within. Most windows are protected by exterior grilles. The church has a piended grey slate roof with lead flashings, and painted cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not inspected in 2001.
The churchyard is enclosed by random rubble walls with shaped copes and plain wrought-iron railings. A pair of square, columned gateposts with projecting flat caps and plain wrought-iron gates mark the southwest (principal) entrance. Coursed ashlar wing walls with square gatepiers, featuring a projecting neck course and cushion caps, define the northwest entrance, while a rubble wall with rounded copes and a pair of square gatepiers with projecting cushion caps form the southeast boundary. Remnants of gas lamp stands are visible along the front drive. The churchyard contains numerous elaborate mid to late 19th century funerary monuments, including vases, urns, gabled gothic revival tombs, classical obelisks, and table grave stones.
