Description

Nethersheild Farmhouse and Steading is an early 19th century building with later additions to the outer and inner elevations of the west steading wing. It features a two-storey, rectangular-plan, three-bay farmhouse with flanking Z-plan steading wings. The exterior is made of painted rubble with painted sandstone ashlar at the margined angles and window margins. The north elevation of the farmhouse has coursed and squared dark rubble, complemented by red sandstone ashlar for the doorpiece, window margins, quoins, and eaves course. The roof is piended and covered with slate.

The farmhouse has four- and twelve-pane sash and case windows, along with tall end stacks. The south steading pavilions include arrow slit ventilators and ashlar-coped skews.

On the northeast elevation, the farmhouse is centrally located with a panelled door featuring an astragalled fanlight and a Doric pilastered doorpiece. There are windows on either side of the door and three windows on the first floor. The steading ranges are slightly recessed to the left and right, each with two windows in the bays flanking the farmhouse and a window in the outer gables.

The southeast elevation shows the farmhouse recessed at the centre, with three windows on both the ground and first floors. The steading bays on the east and west are advanced on the left and right, terminating in gabled pavilions. Various openings are present, including a cross-finial at the inner gable of the east pavilion, a door, and three arrow slit ventilators on the south elevations of the pavilions. The interior has not been seen.
