Description

Eagle Jute Mills, located on Victoria Street in Dundee, was originally built in 1864 for Baxter Brothers Engineering Department and later extended in 1930 by R Gibson for Low and Bonar. The building features a two-storey and attic structure with a 15-by-3-bay layout, constructed from coursed rubble, and topped with a mansard roof. The original 1864 section was expanded in 1930 with a narrower 9-bay block to the east and a two-storey, two-bay block to the west, which includes a hipped roof and a simple Art Deco pediment.

The 1930 front of the spinning shed is a single-storey, 8-bay design, featuring a two-bay corner with a stepped pediment. Notably, the eagle, ornate clock, and urn finials have been removed. The windows in the 1930 sections are set in recessed panels, and there are two loading doors positioned below the mezzanine windows, along with a similar small door added to the 1864 building. The eastern gable has a plain mansard design, and all windows are framed in metal from the 1930 renovation.

Inside the multi-storey section, the structure is iron-framed with two rows of cast-iron columns supporting brick arches. Most of the ground floor columns were replaced with steel and concrete during the 1930 alterations. The interior also features a fine gothic cast-iron roof supported by clustered columns, which is similar in design to that of Upper Dens Mill. The 1930 extension is framed with steel and concrete and has a bowed steel truss roof. Additionally, there are single-storey, steel-framed sheds with north lighting from 1930. The site includes steps leading to a tunnel connecting to Dens Works and a basement jute warehouse.
