Description
7-15 Murraygate in Dundee is a four-storey and attic commercial building designed by William Alexander in 1896. It features eight bays and is styled with Renaissance details. The exterior is made of cream sandstone ashlar and topped with a slated mansard roof. The ground floor has modern shopfronts, while the upper levels retain an original dentilled cornice, a cill course, and a drop-corbelled main cornice at the second floor. The parapet is corniced and coped, with segmental dormers that rise from the wallhead. The building has banded angle pilasters, which are paired at the third floor and topped with a ball finial on the left.
The first and second floors have single and bipartite windows that are pilastered, featuring consoled pediments that alternate between segmental and triangular shapes on the first floor, and lugged and voluted architraves on the second. The third floor has single windows with lugged architraves, all originally fitted with two-pane timber sash and case frames, although some now have modern glazing. The roof is finished with corniced ridge and wallhead stacks.
The front elevation includes two shopfronts at the ground floor, with windows on the first and second floors arranged in a pattern of 2-1-1-2-2-1-1-2, and there are eight windows on the third floor along with eight dormers. The interior has not been seen.
