Description
St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, located at 3 Arthurstone Terrace in Dundee, was built between 1897 and 1899, designed by Thomas Martin Cappon with assistance from Harry East in the earlier stages and William Gillespie Lamond in the later stages. The church features a rectangular plan aligned north-south, constructed from red snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and showcases curvilinear Gothic tracery.
The gable facing Arthurstone Terrace has two simple buttresses and a recessed doorway beneath a crocketted gable, flanked by crocketted ogee hood-moulded lights. Above this, there is a large six-light curvilinear window. The southwest tower is square and consists of three stages with battered corners. It has square-headed two-light windows at the ground level, and a canopied niche containing a figure of St Patrick on the second stage. The belfry stage is low and angle-buttressed, featuring traceried depressed arched louvred openings and angle gargoyles. The top stage is octagonal with louvred openings, a shallow swept roof, and a wrought-iron finial.
The elevation facing Maitland Street consists of eight bays, with the tower forming the first bay. It includes three-light curvilinear traceried pointed arch windows in the second, fourth, fifth, and seventh bays, while square-headed traceried windows are positioned above projecting two-light confessionals with curvilinear parapets in the third and sixth bays. The eighth bay features a four-light window that rises into the gable, accompanied by a two-bay outshot porch with a four-light mullioned and transomed window, a door, and a curvilinear parapet. The east elevation is similar but does not include the tower.
The church has a steep slate roof adorned with ridge tiles and a swept pagoda ventilator, while the interior of the nave is plain.
Adjacent to the church is the presbytery, which is three stories high and features mullioned and transomed windows with a slight ogee at the ground level, a depressed ogee at the first floor, and square-headed windows at the second floor that break through the eaves. The left bay is advanced and gabled, with a small stepped hood moulded door located behind the porch. The presbytery retains its original multiple paned glazing pattern and has a slate roof with gable-end stacks.
Additionally, there are halls designed by Reginald Fairlie in 1927, featuring a simple gable-fronted design with a chamfered arched door, a red snecked rubble gable, harled sides, and later additions. The halls also have a swept slate roof.
