Description

Penninghame Clachan is an earlier to mid 18th century farmhouse that stands two storeys high and features three bays, with later single-storey outbuildings attached. The building is constructed from whinstone rubble, which was previously harled, and has squared margins along with some cement repairs. On the rear elevation, there are two roll-moulded window surrounds on the first floor.

The south entrance elevation has an off-centre door to the right, with a window above and additional windows in the flanking bays on both floors. The door is a boarded two-leaf type. A heraldic panel from the late 18th century, which was originally a gravestone, is set at the centre of the first floor, positioned between the door bay and the outer bay to the left. This panel features the arms of the Earls of Galloway along with a Latin inscription. A former crenellated porch was removed in 1979.

The north rear elevation displays an asymmetrical arrangement of bays. There is an off-centre door to the right, with two windows flanking it on the left at ground level and one on the right, along with two roll-moulded windows above on the first floor. The west gable has a window at ground level on the left. The east gable is joined by later whinstone rubble outbuildings that extend eastward. The west gable features a 12-pane window on the ground floor to the left. The south elevation has a new 12-pane sash and case window, while the rear includes a 12-pane deep-set sash and case window. Modern skylights were added in 1989 to the grey slate roof, which was re-roofed in 1979 using original slates. The building has broad end stacks with thackstanes and ashlar coped skews, which feature masque and head carvings on the skewputts at the front and floral and fruit designs at the rear. Inside, there is a winding timber stair.
