Description

The Courtyard Ranges at the west are part of a large farm steading complex with numerous building dates, primarily from the 18th century. This complex includes a two-storey, originally free-standing early classical house dating from between 1700 and 1730, which is arranged in a long rectangular E-shaped block that connects to the separately listed Dornock Town farmhouse. The central lower linking block, mostly used as a byre, has been altered and features brick additions. There are parallel ranges to the north with a walled rectangular courtyard in between. The buildings are primarily constructed of red rubble with ashlar dressings and have slate roofs.

The house was abandoned around 1950 and originally consisted of four bays with a door located in the third bay. It was later extended by two bays into a full-height long range in the mid-18th century to the east. The entrance features a round-arched door architrave with key-stoning and impost blocks, along with foliate ornamentation in the spandrels. Above the door, a shallow polished ashlar panel connects to the cill. The windows have plain architraves and moulded cills, although the right bay has been significantly altered and now includes a garage. The first-floor windows break the eaves band, and there is a moulded eaves cornice with straight skews, though the stacks have been removed. The rear has lean-tos and openings with chamfered margins.

The interior of the house is mostly gutted, but some original features remain, including panelled window shutters and a chimneypiece on the ground floor. The E range is a plain barn with alterations; the two left bays, which have architraved windows and a wide kitchen fireplace, are part of the house. There is also a modern lean-to glasshouse, and the roof timbers are roughly hewn with wooden pegs.

The courtyard ranges to the west are likely from the second half of the 18th century, featuring a tall barn nearest to the east and a long implement shed opposite. The barn has a segmental-arched door leading to the courtyard, with a tall central projection and lean-tos adjoining to the north. The gable end and chimney flue of an earlier building are incorporated at the northeast corner, visible from the interior.

The detached west block, which is the westmost range, is a long tall structure that is arcaded to the courtyard at ground level, with arches of varying widths, most of which are now blocked. Above, there is a loft with square-headed openings and a bothy at the south end.
