Description
Ruthwell Museum, located in Ruthwell, was originally Scotland's first Savings Bank and was built around 1760. It likely started as two adjoining single-storey cottages, each with three bays and an off-centre door, although the door on the east side has since been converted into a window. The building is constructed of whitewashed rubble with contrasting painted margins and features four-pane sash windows. The original stacks have been removed, and the slate roof includes two skylights. The cottage on the west side once served as the hall for the Male and Female Friendly Society, where the savings bank was established in May 1810 by Reverend Henry Duncan. The narrow windows in this section were likely raised in the 19th century.
