Description
The Proudfoot Institute, located on Mansfield Place in Moffat, was designed by Campbell Douglas and Sellars in 1886, with a later addition from the 19th century. This two-storey building features an asymmetrical plan and elevations, constructed from snecked, squared rubble with polished ashlar dressings.
The entrance front showcases a projecting arcaded portico supported by half-fluted engaged columns and pilasters, with glazing on the sides and an inscription in the frieze. Above, a scrolled pediment encloses an aedicule. The east gable and a large octagonal bay at the west angle feature alternating pediments over the ground floor windows, round-headed windows on the first floor, and oculi inserted into the parapet, topped with a dome and an arcaded cupola.
On the west gable, there is a large blocked window with mullions and transoms. The east elevation presents a broad three-window advanced gable with scroll skewputts, along with two additional paired round-arched windows on the first floor and one stair window. The roofs are slated and include ventilators.
