Description
Kirkland is a late 18th or early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay country house that was altered and enlarged around 1840. The building features an asymmetrical rear and flanking wings. The west elevation is primarily constructed of red or pink ashlar, while the rest of the house is mostly painted rubble. The entrance is located in the inner pedimented bay and consists of a painted Roman Doric doorpiece approached by steps, leading to a recessed panelled door with a decorative fanlight.
The outer bays have two-storey canted windows, with lying-pane glazing on the right. There is a band between the floors and an eaves band, along with end stacks that have diamond flues. The roof is a combination of piended and platform styles. The recessed flanking wings are also two storeys, with a two-bay left wing and a single bay right wing. A square rear stair turret with a cupola is situated between two tall additions, which are linked at the ground level by a low porch. Most of the stacks have diamond flues, and the entire roof is covered with graded slates.
