Description

The former Gretna Cinema, located at 121 Central Avenue in Gretna Village, was designed by C M Crickmer and constructed between 1916 and 1918. This single-storey, three-bay classical building features a near-symmetrical façade set back from the street. It has a projecting central portico with a later dormer above and a gabled auditorium at the rear, which is currently used as a store as of 2010. The structure is made of red brick with raised moulded architraves, while the rear section is painted. The principal elevation facing the street includes a base course and a contrasting moulded cornice with a deep brick band above. There is also a later boundary wall (post-1985) along the street, topped with railings and banded pillars.

The entrance features steps leading to a central, slightly advanced portico with a distyle in antis, flanked by banded pilasters. It has three later, non-traditional part-glazed double doors and flanking single windows. Above, there is a central flat-roofed wallhead dormer with three window openings and alternate moulded panels.

The street elevation includes timber sash and case windows with 6-over-9 and 6-over-6 panes. The entrance has a piended roof covered with grey slates, and there are metal urn-shaped ridge vents on the auditorium.

Inside, as seen in 2010, the auditorium has a partly raked floor and a later part flat dance floor, along with a simple proscenium arch and some decorative metal vents.
