Description
The Congregational Church on Irving Street in Dumfries, designed by Walter Newall, was built in 1835. It features tall, narrow, round-headed windows and pilastered narrow outer pavilions. To the northwest, there is a lower recessed bay that encloses a stair, alongside a two-storey, two-bay terraced house that was likely converted in 1862 to serve as halls and a vestry. The building is constructed of polished red ashlar with slated roofs.
The church has three-light inner windows and single-light outer windows, all of which are multi-paned sashes set within shallow rectangular panels. It includes a deep cill band and an arcaded corbel table that supports the main cornice and parapet. The entrance bay on the left features a wide round-headed doorway with a blind fanlight that has astragals cut in ashlar, along with a round-headed bipartite window above. There is also a wide pilaster strip on the left with blind round-headed lights and a cornice leading to the parapet. The church hall to the right is more straightforward, with a round-headed door on the left, architraved windows, and a cornice and parapet, along with an end stack.
Inside, the church was renovated and re-pewed in 1880, with some later alterations. It features a gallery at the northeast with a panelled front and an organ by John R Miller of Dundee, installed in 1958. The church is set behind modern iron railings.
