Description
Devonvale Hall, built between 1938 and 1940, is a two-storey, T-plan Art Deco hall designed by Arthur Bracewell. The exterior is constructed of coursed cream-coloured concrete blockwork, with partial brick facing, partial rendering to the front, and rendering to the sides and rear. Chamfered concrete margins are present, alongside vertical, coursed concrete banded bays to the upper stair towers, and concrete cills. The roof is covered with red roof tiles. A cantilevered concrete bowed canopy, featuring a stepped parapet, covers the advanced single-storey entrance block, which includes a central plaque with applied decorative butterflies, stylised raised lettering, and the date 'DEVONVALE / 19 HALL 38'. A concrete eaves course and moulded cornice are also visible on the entrance block.
The west (principal) elevation is symmetrical, comprising seven bays arranged in a 3-1-3 pattern. A recessed entrance is centrally located, with bow-fronted steps leading to three double-height timber and glazed doors, flanked by horizontal brick banding. A bronze commemorative plaque is positioned to the right of the entrance. An advanced single-storey, three-bay section formerly used as cloakrooms, flanks the entrance. The upper storey is set back, with a wide central wallhead incorporating horizontal banding and a central plaque, flanked by slightly advanced, piended single-bay stair towers.
The south elevation displays seven bays, featuring a double-height hall with a small stair window to the left and three large windows in the centre. The central window incorporates a circular motif in the upper section and is positioned behind a single-storey brick and concrete entrance block. A lower, single-storey, four-bay section is further advanced to the centre, with plain metal railings enclosing a balcony above. A later access ramp is situated to the right, and an advanced single-storey lavatory block is located to the far right.
The rear (east) elevation has a central stair tower and chimney stack, with narrow horizontal windows directly below the wallhead. The north elevation is similar in design to the south elevation.
The interior of the entrance hall features terrazzo flooring with a blue, black, and green geometric Art Deco pattern, along with a moulded oak chimney piece incorporating an electric fire surround. Narrow transomed and mullioned lights illuminate chequered terrazzo staircases with bent mahogany handrails, which lead to balconies on the north and south sides of the entrance hall. The main hall showcases a massive banded and stuccoed dome ceiling and a balcony to the west. A coffered ceiling is located beneath the balcony. A stage is present to the east, with moulded and stepped detailing. Kitchen and bar facilities are situated adjacent to the hall on either side. The hall floor and stage are made of teak, and pilastered and moulded wood architraves frame the doors and principal windows. Original light fittings and ironmongery are preserved, along with extensive wooden mouldings and cornicing throughout. Copper-hooded radiators are also present.
