Description

4 Rosebery Crescent in Edinburgh is a pair of three-storey houses with a basement, built in the later 19th century by John Chesser. These two-bay plain classical houses feature piend-roofed canted bays and are constructed from polished, coursed sandstone ashlar, with the basement being droved. The basement at No. 5 is rendered and slightly advanced, while No. 4 has a base course. There is a cill course at the first and second floors, and recessed panels above the lights of the canted bay at the ground and first floors. The entrance features a corniced doorpiece with abbreviated pilasters flanking a margin-framed doorway, and there are margins around the first-floor window above. The houses also have a dentilled cornice and skews.

On the principal elevation, there is a panelled timber door with a fanlight, flanked on the left by a small window, beneath an entrance platt leading to the bay at the basement of each house. Each house has a light in the centre of the canted bay on the right, a panelled timber door with a rectangular fanlight at the bay to the left on the ground floor, and a single window on the floors above. There are lights on each face of the canted bay on the right at all floors.

The windows are two-pane timber sash and case, diminishing in height from the ground to the second floors. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a coped gablehead and mutual stacks set to the rear, complete with tall cans. The houses also have cast-iron rainwater goods. Additionally, there are fleur-de-lys iron railings surrounding the oversailing entrance platt and set in the coping along the street.
