Description
This building is a hotel located at 1 Rosebery Crescent in Edinburgh, designed by John Chesser in the later 19th century. It is a three-storey structure with a basement and features a two-bay plain classical style, highlighted by a piend-roofed canted bay. The exterior is made of polished, coursed sandstone ashlar, with a droved finish at the basement level. It includes a base course, a cill course on the first and second floors, and recessed panels above the windows in the canted bay on the ground and first floors. The entrance has a corniced doorpiece with abbreviated pilasters flanking a margin-framed doorway, and there are margins around the first-floor window above, topped with a dentilled cornice.
On the west (principal) elevation, there is a panelled timber door beneath an entrance platt leading to the bay on the left side at the basement level. The canted bay on the right features a light at the centre, while the ground floor has a two-leaf panelled timber door with a rectangular fanlight in the doorpiece to the left. Each floor above has a single window, and the canted bay has lights on each face. The windows are 2-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a rendered gablehead stack on the left with original moulded octagonal cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
Additionally, there are fleur-de-lys iron railings on the oversailing entrance platt and set in the coping along the street.
