Description

2, 4, 6, 8, 10 St Stephen Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Brown in 1825. It has four storeys and a basement, constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, which is polished at the principal floor. The building features a cill course at the first floor, projecting cills at the second floor, another cill course at the third floor, and a blocking course with a cornice at the third floor. The entrance platts and steps are also made of ashlar and extend over the basement.

The northwest elevation, which is the principal facade, has six bays and includes a slightly recessed three-window bowed corner bay on the right. This bay features a basket-arched wrought-iron gateway with decorative details and a pagoda-capped lamp, leading to the steps of a basement public house. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with a pawn-broker sign located to the right of center at the first floor. The St Stephen Street elevation consists of three three-bay shop fronts and one two-bay shop front, showcasing a variety of glazed doors and multi-pane square fanlights, along with plate glass and lying-pane windows. There is a recessed common stair door to the right of center, which is flush-panelled with a six-pane fanlight. Additionally, there is a part-infilled door in the penultimate bay from the right, with the fanlight remaining as a window. The steps to the basement have regular openings in the bays, and the upper floors maintain regular fenestration with a pawn-broker sign centered at the first floor.

The southwest elevation, facing 23-24 North West Circus Place, has three bays and features a five-bay pilastraded shop front with a continuous cornice at the ground level. This shop front includes a three-bay section on the right with a modern timber door and rectangular fanlight at the center, flanked by plate glass windows. To the left, there is a two-bay shop front with a two-leaf four-panel door on the left and a plate glass window on the right. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with blind windows in the bays to the left at all floors, and a pawn-broker sign to the right of center at the first floor.

The building predominantly has twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge stacks are made of broached ashlar and are coped with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings, featuring some fleur-de-lis baluster heads and pineapple finials.
