Description
This is a substantial, four-storey and basement, eighteen-bay terraced tenement located on North West Circus Place, Edinburgh. Built in 1825 by Robert Brown, with later alterations carried out by Reid and Forbes in 1933. The building is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, with a stepped design at the centre. A prominent cill course runs along the first floor, with projecting cills at the second floor, another cill course at the third floor, and a cornice and blocking course completing the facade. Oversailing ashlar entrance platts and steps provide access to the basement levels of numbers 17-22.
The principal (south-west) elevation presents a nine-bay terrace to the right, featuring an advanced three-bay section with polished granite and black granite shop fronts. This section incorporates carved stone mullions with Art Deco motifs, a two-leaf, ten-panel timber door, and a five-panel timber common stair door; both feature rectangular fanlights and wrought-iron screens, leading to a deep step terrace at street level. Another advanced, three-bay section to the right showcases a recessed doorpiece with a glazed timber door and a carved stone armorial panel above. The nine-bay terrace to the left comprises pilastraded shop fronts with a continuous cornice, a six-panel timber common stair door with a fanlight, various shop fronts with glazed doors and rectangular fanlights, and a range of two-leaf, six-panel timber doors with plate glass fanlights. A variety of plate glass windows are also visible. Basement access is provided by steps at numbers 17, 18, and 22, with a basement window located in the outer left bay of number 22. The upper floors have regularly spaced windows.
The south-east elevation is constructed of coursed rubble with long and short quoins, and features windows centred on each floor, with sandstone detailing at ground floor level. The north-west elevation adjoins another terrace and is documented under a separate listing.
The building uses predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and is covered by a grey slate M-roof with cast-iron rainwater goods. The wallhead features a rubble wallhead stack with broached ashlar quoins and ridge stacks, topped with circular cans.
Interior details are limited, but evidence suggests the presence of working panelled shutters. Number 15, formerly a bank, contains an Art Deco Classical interior with a banking hall and a manager's office. This space includes Egyptianesque columns, a marble floor, a sarcophagus above an entrance door, consoles to a pilastered doorpiece, engraved frosted glazing, wall benches flanking radiator covers with brass patterned grilles, and ornate entrance door handles displaying thistle motifs, along with contrasting veneers to the dado.
Ashlar copes are surmounted by coped cast-iron railings.
