Description

St Colm's Education Centre and College, also known as the Annie Small Centre, is a building designed by Ramsay Traquair between 1910 and 1911. It features a mix of late Scots round-arched Gothic and Romanesque styles. The structure is a broad five-bay rectangle oriented north-south, with halls situated beneath it on a sloping site. The northern front has a transverse saddleback tower that spans the full width of the church, flanked by apsidal stair turrets at the gables. There is a projecting central porch with bold triple lancets above it. To the southeast, there is a two-storey wing that contains study and service rooms, featuring a forestair, an apsidal bay, and a pencil-type chimney.

The building is constructed of finely built rubble and showcases high-quality details inspired by Lorimer, including a sculpture of a galleon at the porch, and the Lion of St Mark and the Eagle of St John at the tower. The stair turrets have flushwork eaves galleries, and there are crosses at the gables of the saddleback. An elaborate ironwork grille by Thomas Hadden is located at the porch. The spacious terraced gardens slope down to the Water of Leith on both sides.

Inside, there is a good vestibule in the tower with a glazed oak screen leading to the church. The interior features segmental arches leading to semi-domed cantilever stairs at the ends. The body of the church is aisleless and has a simple barrel ceiling, with a gallery at the north end and twin lecterns flanking a richly detailed organ front designed by Sir Frank Mears in 1925.
