4, 5 Hermitage Place, Leith, Edinburgh

4 and 5 Hermitage Place in Leith, Edinburgh, are a pair of former terraced houses built by Thomas Bonnar after 1817. The buildings are two stories tall with six bays and feature attics and a basement. The front is made of ashlar sandstone, polished and channelled on the first floor, with voussoirs above the doors and windows. The stonework is droved on the first floor and basement, and there are base and band courses between the ground and first floors, along with a cill course for the first-floor windows and a mutuled eaves cornice with a blocking course.

On the north elevation, the entrance doors are located in the third bay at ground level, with an outer left bay at the basement level. The entrance features a panelled door and a rectangular plate glass fanlight. The building has a regular arrangement of windows, including basement windows and remodelled dormers in each bay.

The south elevation has not been seen since 1995. The principal openings have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the dormers have modern glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring piended and slate-hung dormers. There are droved ashlar multi-flue stacks with coping and ashlar skew copes. An eight-step stone staircase leads down to the basement recess, and there is a cast-iron downpipe.

The boundary walls consist of painted droved ashlar dwarf walls with coping along the street, topped with modern railings.
