Description
1 Hermitage Place in Edinburgh is a two-storey, three-bay house with an attic and raised basement, built around 1820 by Thomas Bonnar. It is located at the end of a terrace and features painted droved ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings on the front, coursed squared rubble on the gable wall, and random rubble at the rear. The building has a base course and a cill course for the ground floor windows, along with a mutule eaves cornice and a blocking course.
On the northwest (principal) elevation, the entrance door is centrally located and framed by a Doric columned doorpiece with a cornice and blocking course. The doorway is round-arched and includes a semicircular fanlight. To the left, there is a flanking canted window with a cornice and blocking course, and to the right, a three-light window. The basement features windows as well.
The first floor has three rectangular openings, with two square slate-hung dormers above the outer bays and a small rooflight in the center. The northeast elevation is a blank gable wall, while the southeast elevation was not visible in 1995.
The house has plate glass timber sash and case windows on the ground and first floors, a plate glass fanlight, and modern dormer windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features piended dormers. There are wallhead stacks, including an ashlar gablehead stack with coping and a rendered shared stack with ashlar coping. The skews are ashlar coped.
The boundary wall consists of a painted droved ashlar dwarf wall topped with ashlar coping.
