Description
14-18 Leven Terrace is a four-storey and basement tenement block with a mansard roof, built between 1867 and 1870 by David McGibbon. It features three spired polygonal towers and is located at the corner of Glengyle and Leven Terraces. The building is constructed of polished ashlar and includes band courses between the basement and ground levels, as well as at the window-heads of the ground, first, and third floors, with a carved rosette motif on the third floor. There are cill bands at the first and third floors and a mutuled eaves cornice. The windows are bracketed with moulded surrounds, corniced at the ground and first floors, and slightly battered at the third floor, showcasing high-quality chip carving. The bipartite windows have stone mullions.
On the south elevation facing Glengyle Terrace, there are four bays with six-storey polygonal towers at the outer bays topped with steeply-pitched, ball-finialled slated prismatic roofs. The two central bays are regularly fenestrated, and there are pedimented dormers in the attic. An aedicule between the first-floor windows is dated 1869 and features a carved crowned lion's head, a motto ('and spare e'en do nocht'), and the initials WDM, which stand for WD McGregor, the builder and developer.
The east elevation facing Leven Terrace consists of a six-bay block with six-storey polygonal corner towers at the outer bays, also with ball-finialled slated conical roofs. The four inner bays are regularly fenestrated, and there are pedimented dormers in the attic. The ground floor bays alternate between doors and windows, featuring timber panelled doors with plate glass fanlights, and stone steps that lead to the basement areas.
The property is enclosed by spear-headed cast-iron railings on a low stone coped wall surrounding the basement area and steps. The windows predominantly feature plate glass in timber sash and case frames, and the roof is covered with grey slates. There are rendered stacks at the wallhead that are splayed and at the ridge.
