Description

3 Regent Street in Portobello, Edinburgh, is a group of classical terraced houses built in the earlier 19th century, with later alterations. The building is two stories high and consists of nine bays. The ground floor is rendered and painted, while the first floor features droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings on Nos 3, 7, and 9. The rubble on the side elevation of No 3 has been heavily pointed and repaired with render. Architectural details include a base course, a band course between the floors, a cornice, and a blocking course.

On the west (principal) elevation, the bays are arranged irregularly: two bays for No 3, three bays for Nos 5 and 7, and four bays for No 9. The penultimate bays and the bays flanking the center have deep-set panelled doors with rectangular plate glass fanlights above, and there are windows at the first floor above each door. The modern doors in the bays to the left of the center have a large plate glass fanlight above the door on the left and a blinded window at the first floor above. Each remaining bay has windows on both floors.

The east (rear) elevation was not seen in 1994. The windows include 12-pane timber sash and case windows on No 7 and the ground floor of No 9, while Nos 3, 5, and the outer bays of No 9 at the first floor have plate glass timber sash and case windows. There is a casement window at the center of the first floor of No 9. The roof is covered with grey slate and features coped skews that divide the houses. There are ashlar mutual stacks, with rendered sections between Nos 3 and 5, and a gablehead stack on No 3.

The interiors were not seen in 1994. The boundary walls are rendered with coping for Nos 3 and 5, while No 9 has a rubble wall with coping. All the boundary walls previously had railings, with some remaining at No 3.
