Description
2 Gillespie Street in Edinburgh is a terrace of two-storey and attic houses built between 1820 and 1825, excluding No 6. The houses have a rectangular plan and a plain symmetrical classical style, constructed from coursed sandstone with painted architraves and corniced doorpieces. The windows feature long and short surrounds, and No 6 has strip quoins.
On the west elevation, Nos 2, 4, and 5 have doorpieces and timber doors located to the right at ground level, while Nos 3 and 6 have doorpieces with recessed timber doors to the left. Each house has single windows in the flanking bays, regular fenestration on the upper floor, and small box dormers on Nos 2 and 3. No 4 has a piended canted dormer, and No 5 features a piended dormer.
The windows are 2-pane timber sash and case. The roof is a grey slate piended style with stone skews. There are coped, rendered stacks with corniced cans, and a small corniced stack with a single octagonal can is located between Nos 5 and 6. The houses also have cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of a continuous coped, coursed sandstone wall with breaks for pedestrian entrances.
