Description

Copeland House, formerly known as the Astronomer's House, is a two-storey, three-bay asymmetrical classical house built between 1892 and 1894 by W W Robertson of HM Office of Works. It was constructed for the Astronomer Royal as part of the Royal Observatory group on Blackford Hill. The building is made of cream sandstone ashlar and features a base course, pilasters flanking window openings, a dividing band course, and dentilled eaves and cornice.

The north elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a central doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight, flanked by pilasters and topped with a dentilled cornice and a carved panel above the door. There is a single window on the first floor above the entrance and additional windows on both floors in a recessed bay to the outer right. To the outer left on the ground floor, there is a three-light bowed window with a dentilled cornice and a balustraded parapet, with a bipartite window above it on the first floor.

On the east side, there is a full-height, four-light canted window to the outer right, also with a dentilled cornice between floors. The central bay has single windows on both floors, while the outer left features an advanced tripartite window at the ground floor, with a dentilled cornice and urn finials above it, and a bipartite window on the first floor.

The south elevation includes an original conservatory at the ground floor of the gabled bay to the outer right, with carved bargeboards on the gable and irregular fenestration. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is covered in grey slate and has coped wallhead stacks.

The interior was last seen in 2015 and retains much of the original floor plan, now used for office accommodation. It features timber and glazed doors, an arched detail in the main entrance hall, and a staircase handrail that appears to have been altered around 1930.
