James Clark School, St Leonard's Lane, Edinburgh

The James Clark School, located on St Leonard's Lane in Edinburgh, was extended by John Alexander Carfrae between 1913 and 1919, with work completed in 1923. This building showcases a Free Franco-Scottish early renaissance style, characterized by its finely composed details and thoughtful siting. It has an approximately L-shaped plan and consists of two storeys with basements at the eastern angle. The substructure is made of random rubble and features a battered design that connects to Holyrood Park. The ground floor windows are treated with a chamfered pilastrade, while the first floor boasts eight elaborate dormer heads. The gable at the north end includes richly detailed machicolated bows and dormers, topped with a pyramid roof that transitions to a conical shape. The south face features a bay window and a set-back verandah on the upper floor, along with an ornate Francois Ier doorpiece. Additionally, there is an arched gateway with a niche facing St Leonard's Lane.
