Description
The Goods Shed at St Leonard's Station and Coal Depot, located on St Leonard's Lane in Edinburgh, was built around 1840. This railway goods shed and terminus was constructed for the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway, following the passing of its Act on May 26, 1826. The building is a three-storey structure that is long, shallow, and rectangular in shape, with a slight curve towards the east at the north end. It features a rubble-built exterior with ashlar dressings and a piended slate roof.
At the south end, there are two arched openings for the trainshed, although one of these has been bricked up. The west long wall has fenestration primarily arranged in three-bay groupings, with a single window at ground level and hoist doorways in the fourth bays. The fourth hoist doorway bay on the left is placed asymmetrically. Most windows are nine-paned with top hoppers. The presence of tusking at the north end suggests there were plans for further construction, and there is a brick box over the northwest corner, likely intended for lift machinery.
Inside, the shed has a central row of cast-iron columns on the lower two floors, with a railway track located at the south end. The east wall is built up to one and a half storeys for about half its length, with red and white brick at the south end. Adjacent to the entrance is a detached low gabled range that features unusual small slit openings below the eaves, along with large polished ashlar gatepiers. A line of railway track is evident to the south of the building.
