6 Gloucester Place, Edinburgh

14 Gloucester Place in Edinburgh is a terraced block built between 1822 and 1824 by Thomas Bonnar. The building is three stories high, with an attic and basement, and consists of 18 bays divided into six three-bay tenements. It features polished sandstone ashlar, with a channelled finish at the principal floor and a broached finish at the basement. There is a band course at the principal floor, a cill course at the first and second floors, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor, which returns and terminates at the corners. The entrance steps and platforms are made of ashlar and extend over the basement.

On the south elevation, each three-bay tenement has recessed doorways in the right bays at the principal floor, except for No 12, which has its door in the left of centre bay. The doors are flush-panelled and come with a variety of plate glass and decorative rectangular fanlights. Nos 12 and 14, which are to the left, are slightly advanced. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows set in recesses, while the upper floors have regular fenestration. The first-floor windows are architraved and feature cornices, with decorative cast-iron balconies above the cill course. No 14 has window guards in the bays at the second floor. The basement area is flagged and has coped rubble retaining walls, with predominantly vertically boarded timber doors leading to the cellars.

The west elevation, which faces Gloucester Street, is made of coursed rubble and has centrally placed windows on all floors, a balcony at the first floor, and a window guard at the second floor. The building predominantly has plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape, featuring pairs of later dormer windows on Nos 4, 6, and 10, along with modern roof lights on No 8 on the south pitch. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron, and there are harled ridge stacks as well as broached ashlar ridge stacks with harled dressings and broached ashlar gablehead stacks, all capped with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials. There are cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes.
