Description
52 India Street in Edinburgh is a Grade A listed building designed by Thomas Bonnar between 1822 and 1824. It is a four-storey and basement structure with five bays, forming an end pavilion of a terraced block. The exterior is finished in polished sandstone ashlar, featuring channelled work at the principal floor and broached ashlar at the basement. Notable architectural details include a band course at the principal floor, a cill course at the first and third floors, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.
On the south elevation, the central three bays are slightly advanced, with a recessed doorpiece located in the penultimate bay to the right, featuring a flush-panelled door and a rectangular fanlight. The principal floor has windows set in recesses, while the upper floors exhibit regular fenestration. The first-floor windows are architraved and topped with cornices, and there are decorative cast-iron balconies in the first-floor bays. The basement area is flagged and has predominantly vertically boarded timber doors leading to the cellars.
The east elevation, which faces India Street, includes the even-numbered properties from 46 to 52, forming a five-bay block that is advanced from No. 54 India Street. The outer bays are further advanced and framed by Ionic pilasters on the upper floors. Recessed doorpieces are found at the principal floor and to the left of the central bay, featuring flush-panelled doors with rectangular fanlights. Windows are positioned to the right of the centre bay and in the outer bays, with regular fenestration above. The first-floor bays have decorative cast-iron balconies, except for the penultimate bay to the left, and window guards are present in the bays centred at the third floor and in the penultimate bay to the right at the third floor. The basement features three-bay shop fronts that flank the steps and entrance platts, with recessed flush-panelled doors and plate glass windows.
The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge and wallhead stacks are harled and coped with circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1997. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials. Additionally, there are cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes.
