Description

18 Hopetoun Crescent in Edinburgh is an A-listed building designed by Robert Brown in 1827. This two-storey structure with a basement and attic features a six-bay terraced pair. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with rubble on the side and rear elevations, and has painted columns and architraves. The building includes a base course, aprons to the architraved windows on the ground floor, and a continuous decorative iron balcony on the first floor. The first-floor windows are taller, corniced, and architraved, while the building has an eaves band and blocking course. Some cornices have been removed, and there are ashlar steps and entrance platts that oversail the basement.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there are architraved doorpieces for each of the three bays, complete with fanlights. The windows in the bays remain, and there is a colonnade of coupled Ionic fluted columns at the ground level, with regular fenestration above and four small box dormers. The basement features segmental arched windows.

The southwest elevation has a blank gable wall, while the northeast elevation includes a single-storey brick-built addition that was constructed much later.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane glazing on the ground floor and 15-pane glazing on the first floor. It is topped with grey slates, gablehead and ashlar ridge stacks with terracotta cans, and coped skews with moulded skewputts. Unique cast-iron railings feature harp and fleur-de-lys heads. The interior was not seen in 1998.
