Description

18, 20, 22, and 22A Annandale Street in Edinburgh is a classical tenement building designed by Robert Brown in 1825. It is a four-storey structure with a basement and features a wallhead attic on the fourth storey. The principal elevation is constructed of rusticated sandstone ashlar at the ground level, while the side and rear elevations are made of coursed rubble. The building includes a base course, a cill band course at the first floor, a cill band at the third floor, and a cornice between the third and fourth floors. There is also an eaves cornice and a blocking course, along with moulded architraves on the first and second floors. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that extend over the basement.

The west (principal) elevation has a timber panelled door at the center, which is topped by a fanlight and set within a porch supported by fluted Doric columns and cornice. There are panelled pilasters on either side of round-arched entrances that contain timber panelled doors and round-arched radial fanlights in the third and seventh bays. The remaining bays feature windows, with a regular arrangement above. The first floor has tall windows that decrease in size as they approach the attic.

On the south (side) elevation, there is a garage at the ground level, with a blank gable wall above that has blocked openings. The building is fitted with timber sash and case windows, featuring 12-pane glazing, and 15-pane glazing at the first floor. It has gablehead and ridge stacks with terracotta cans, as well as cast-iron railings adorned with decorative finials. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
