Description

7 and 7A Hopetoun Crescent in Edinburgh is a pair of terraced buildings designed by Robert Brown in 1827. They are two stories tall with a basement and attic, featuring six bays. The exterior is made of cleaned sandstone ashlar, with rubble on the side and rear elevations. Notable architectural elements include a base course, aprons beneath the ground floor windows, and a continuous decorative iron balcony on the first floor. The first-floor windows are tall, corniced, and architraved, and there is an eaves band and blocking course. The ashlar steps and entrance platts extend over the basement.

On the principal elevation facing southeast, there are architraved door-pieces to the left of three bays, each with fanlights, and windows in the remaining bays. The ground floor features a colonnade of coupled fluted Ionic columns, with regular fenestration above and four box dormers.

The southwest and northeast gable elevations are blank walls. The northwest rear elevation has six bays arranged in a 2-1-2-1 pattern, with three single-storey projections at the ground level that have windows, and regular fenestration above.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 12-pane glazing on the ground floor and 15-pane glazing on the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are gablehead and ashlar ridge stacks with terracotta cans, as well as skews with moulded skewputts. The cast-iron railings feature an unusually designed fleur-de-lys and harp motif. The interior was not seen in 1998.
