Description

1784-90; early 19th century shopfront; extension to rear in Rose Street by Covell Matthews Partnership, 1975. 3-storey on raised basement and attic former classical tenement on corner site with shops at ground. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings; rubble to gable. Long and short quoins at corner.

HANOVER STREET ELEVATION: 5-bay. Pilastraded 6-bay shop at ground (formerly 2 shops - door to outer left blocked as window), above basement restaurant. 5 piend-roofed dormers (as adjoining block).

THISTLE STREET ELEVATION: irregular 3-bay gable with single bay wing containing pilastraded shop at ground; 3 further modern bays to left.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; reduced rubble stack to gable, rebuilt stone stack to S.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995. Upper floors united with modern block to N (see separate listing).

RAILINGS: plain cast-iron railings to steps and basement.
