Description

16 Bank Street in Edinburgh is a corner tenement building dating from around 1810, with later alterations and additions made in 1898. It has five storeys and an attic, featuring shops on the ground floor. The building has five bays facing Bank Street, with a later canted corner bay that includes a bowed shop at ground level and a four-storey canted oriel window above, which has four lights. There are three bays on the North Bank Street side. The exterior is made of ashlar, which is painted at the ground level. Cill courses are present at the first and third floors, and there is a dividing band between the first and second floors.

On the Bank Street elevation, the bays are grouped in a 4:1 arrangement. The shops have timber panelled storm doors, and there are blind windows on the first, second, and third floors in the second bay from the left. To the outer right, there is a timber panelled door with a small-pane fanlight set in a corniced and pilastered doorpiece.

The bowed corner features bowed glass for the shop, with pilaster strips that are channelled to the first floor. The oriel window has a shaped parapet, and there is a tripartite window above it, along with a parapet at the roofline that is balustered in the centre.

The North Bank Street elevation is regularly fenestrated and includes large slate-hung timber dormers with pediments added in 1898 to the attic. The windows predominantly feature plate glass in timber sash and case frames, with some having 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates. There is a broad brick stack on the outer left, a cement-rendered wallhead stack on the right at Bank Street, and a corniced ashlar wallhead stack on the left at North Bank Street, all equipped with circular cans.
