Description
77 George Street in Edinburgh is a former house dating from around 1775, which has undergone significant alterations over the years. The building is three stories tall with an attic and features three bays. It is constructed from droved cream sandstone ashlar, with No 77 rendered and painted, and includes some timber dressings. A modern shopfront has been added, connecting both houses and providing a doorway to upper offices in the center.
At No 77, there is an early 20th-century projection on the first floor, which is framed by paired pilasters and features large mullioned and transomed windows. The second floor has windows with lugged architraves, and there is a cornice with a balustraded parapet that is interrupted by pedimented wallhead dormers.
No 79 has first-floor windows with lugged architraves, and the center window is topped with a consoled pediment. It also features a pair of large pilastered tripartite gabled dormers.
The windows throughout are timber sash and case, with both plate glass and four-pane designs. The building has ashlar coped skews and stone stacks, which have been rebuilt on the east side, topped with grey slates.
Inside, there are saloons located at the rear.
