Description
Manor House, located at 17 Boswall Road in Edinburgh, dates back to around 1828 and has undergone later alterations and extensions, including redevelopment in 1965. This austere classical villa is two stories tall and features five bays, with a lower single-bay pavilion to the east. The outer canted bays of the main block were added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of lightly droved sandstone ashlar, with coursed sandstone on the sides and rear. Notable features include an outlook tower and a canted bay at the rear, as well as base and blocking courses and an eaves cornice. The segmental-headed windows are adorned with architraves.
The south elevation, which is the principal front, features a porch with fluted Greek Doric columns and an entablature in the outer right bay of the main block. This porch is topped by a canted window with a balustraded parapet. There is also a balustraded two-storey canted window in the outer left bay, along with segmental-headed windows in the canted bays and the ground floor center bays.
On the north (rear) elevation, there is a central piend-roofed two-storey canted bay that includes a decorative wrought-iron balcony at the first floor level. A two-storey bay is situated to the right, while a narrow two-storey bay flanks the left, topped by an outlook tower that was formerly a viewing platform but has been recently enclosed and glazed. The lower bay features windows set in an arched recessed panel to the left.
The windows predominantly consist of plate glass in timber sash and case frames, with a 6-pane lying-pane pattern in the upper sashes of the second storey on the south elevation. The building is topped with graded grey slates and has corniced ashlar stacks.
The property is enclosed by boundary walls, railings, gates, and gatepiers. The front features low ashlar walls with a base course and ashlar coping. There are very elaborate later wrought-iron railings designed in 1913, along with gates, gateposts, a standard lamp, and a working fountain. Additionally, there are coursed sandstone retaining walls with arched coping to the west and north.
