Description
36 Primrose Bank Road is a two-storey and attic terrace of four houses, designed by A Hunter Crawford in 1895, with later alterations and additions. The building is constructed of red brick and mock half-timbering, featuring contrasting stone dressings and a symmetrical layout. The bays are arranged in a 2-4-2 pattern, with the outer blocks slightly advanced and gabled. The base course is made of darker brick, with a stone band lintel course at the ground level and a battered stone band at the first-floor cills and eaves.
The principal elevation is symmetrically arranged with black and white painted projecting windows that have stone cills and brick bases in the first, fourth, fifth, and eighth bays. The remaining bays have off-centre doors, each with a projecting stone cornice above an oval fanlight and depressed-arched doorways. The doors are timber panelled with decorative hinges. The first floor of the central block and the attic floor of the outer blocks feature half-timbering. The fenestration is regular, with paired windows in the gables and two flat-roofed slate-hung dormers in the roof.
The side elevations include slated half-pitched-roofed porches, with the eastern porch located behind a later garage addition. A brick chimney breast breaks through the half-timbering in the gableheads.
The rear elevation has undergone considerable later alterations and additions. The windows are timber casements, with plate glass on the lower sections and four panes above on the ground floor, while the upper floors predominantly feature 16-pane windows. The roofs are red tiled, sweeping to overhanging eaves, with stone-coped brick stacks at the ridge and gable ends topped with decorative terracotta cans. The mutual skew is also stone-coped.
The property is enclosed by low stone walls and features stone and brick gatepiers with pyramidal caps at two central pedestrian gates.
